Interface brings some calm to the Aerotel hotel at Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2)
Conveniently positioned at over 40 international airports around the world, Aerotel is a network of transit hotels with a difference. The Plaza Premium Group created Aerotel as a response to the way its guests were using its lounges. “We realised that travellers do not see the value of paying for 24 hours in a hotel room, away from the airport, when they’d only be spending a few hours,” explained Kimberly Wong, Regional General Manager (Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia & Maldives) at the Plaza Premium Group.

Combatting noise is an issue for any hotel that’s close to an airport, but it’s especially important for a transit hotel with guests who come and go at all hours of the day and night. Carpets were incorporated into the design to ensure that the hotel could still be a comfortable, quiet place to get some much-needed sleep. The design team also wanted to leverage the underfoot comfort and dust-trapping properties of carpets to ensure a safe and healthy environment for guests and staff alike.
Aerotel Kuala Lumpur chose to work directly with Interface on this project because they wanted to engage with a well-established company with a proven track record in supplying and fitting flooring in high-wear hospitality settings. “The quality, designs and the unique range of products available, coupled with the service extended, helped us to combine value and brilliance in our projects,” said Kimberly.
Working with Interface’s Malaysia hospitality team, Aerotel chose the Human Nature collection for guestrooms and hotel corridors. Human Nature is a range of carpet tiles that mimic nature – think pebble pathways, weathered stone, grassy fields or flowering meadows. Here Interface’s Skinny Planks – long and narrow 100 x 25 cm carpet tiles – are used to create a herringbone pattern with flashes of green in guestrooms, while in the hallways a diagonal interlocking design in shades of cool and warm grey perfectly match the wall panelling.
Transit hotels are often windowless, which can disconnect guests and staff with the outside world. The Human Nature collection is designed to combat this problem and reconnect people with nature. Based on the idea that closeness to nature supports human wellbeing, Human Nature takes its cues from the visual, tactile textures found in the most elemental of floor coverings – forest floors, grassy fields and pebbled garden paths. Warm colours, variations of texture and natural patterns recreate the feeling of walking within nature, helping guests to feel calm, relaxed and at home.
